Science is Amazing (especially all the cool plants!)

February 9, 2018

"From plants to planets, Science is Amazing!" - who agrees? I know I do!  🙌 This is exactly the reason why I volunteered a few years back to be a guest admin for the Science is Amazing Facebook page, supported by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology and The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research 🔬

Every two weeks, there is a new guest admin, so there's a huge variety of science news shared! I've had the opportunity to be the guest admin three times over the last few years, and now I'm back again for another two weeks 😊

It's been such a great opportunity to share cool plants with a wider audience and to practice my sci-comm skills! I've decided to put a little archive of my posts together, starting with the first series of posts I made in 2015 all about the plants I study in my PhD research: carnivorous plants!

  • Introduction

  • What exactly is a carnivorous plant?

  • The most wonderful plants in the world, according to Charles Darwin

  • How do Venus flytraps get their meals?

  • Convergent evolution of pitcher plants

  • What's your favourite carnivorous plant?

Since then, I've contributed a few more posts over the years all about carnivorous plants:

  • Updated introduction

  • Have you ever seen a carnivorous plant in the wild?

  • Documentary on Nepenthes clipeata, by Stewart McPherson

  • Nepenthes hemsleyana and the woolly bat

But of course, carnivorous plants aren't the only amazing plants! I've also contributed the following posts about other areas of botany:

  • Seed banks at Kew Gardens

  • Great Western Woodlands

  • Lotus Effect

  • Mimosa pudica

  • Kings Park Botanic Gardens Festival

  • Behind the scenes at Kings Park Botanic Gardens

And lots of other cool sciencey news too:

  • A scientist for Australian of the Year!

  • Ecology on Christmas Island

  • The googly eyed Cephalopod

  • How did our solar system evolve?

  • Stromatolites: stepping back in time

  • And a bit of fun! Choose your weapon...

Make sure to check out the Science is Amazing page on Facebook to see all my posts for the next two weeks!
